Aidan Burley - Extend free parking in Rugely

Aidan Burley, the Conservative parliamentary spokesman for Rugeley has entered into the debate over the future of the town centre by asking the council to consider doubling the period allowed for free, onstreet parking. The current arrangements only allow for a maximum stay of 20 minutes.

The issue of car parking charges, and the availability of on-street parking, has been a hot topic over the last year, following the opening of the bypass and the focus by the Conservatives on the future of the centre.
Mr Burley believes that extending the period of free parking would encourage people to spend longer in the town centre and so support traders who are suffering in the current financial climate.

Discussing the proposal, Aidan said:

“We need to draw people into the town. Whilst recent developments such as the bypass, the swimming pool, and new estate supermarkets are beneficial, their net effect has been to provide reasons to stay away.

“In the current economic climate, with all its difficulties for retailers, we are facing the real possibility that we could lose our town centre unless something is done.

“One important initiative that the council can take in these difficult times – even if only for 12 months – is to extend the period of free on-street parking to 30 or even 40 minutes. The current period is totally insufficient to do anything other than dash to one shop and then dash back again. Even that is difficult if there is a queue.

“By allowing extra time, people will be able to spend a few more minutes in the town and therefore be able to visit more than one shop.

“I appreciate that government policies mean the council also faces financial constraints at this time. That is why I am making a proposal with limited cost implications, but potentially important benefits. People who need between 20 and 30 minutes in the centre are not using the pay-and-display car parks – more often than not they are just not coming in at all.”

Fair Fuel Stabaliser

Following the start of a nationwide consultation on the price of fuel, Aidan Burley, prospective Conservative MP for Cannock Chase said:"It's really important that the Government does more to tackle the cost of living here in Cannock Chase. Petrol prices are one of the biggest problems for many of the people I speak with and the prospect of a further 2p a litre tax rise in October is going to hit families hard. I know my own car costs an extra £40 a month to fill up compared to this time last year.

"I’m keen that anyone in our area, who has a view on the price of petrol and diesel is able to make their voice heard. That is why I have attached George Osborne's consultation document on plans to stabilise the price of fuel here - it is open to anyone in Cannock Chase to read and comment on. Had the Fair Fuel Stabiliser been introduced in the last budget, people in our area would already be paying 5p a litre less every time they fill up at the pumps."
